Oscillations and Waves has fifteen highly interactive teaching tools to address abstract concepts such as how a longitudinal wave moves and how an interference pattern is formed. You can alter variables instantly seeing changes in the physical model. For example, in the two source interference teaching tool you can alter the slit spacing and wavelength and measure the interference fringe spacing. You can also print the screen diagram and measure the path distance between fringes on paper.

Each teaching tool is supplemented with printable explanations and tasks which involve analyzing data exported from the model and the tasks have detailed solutions which are password protected to control access. This makes Oscillations and Waves an effective teaching resource which is suitable for both demonstration and independent study.

Oscillations and Waves will help students understand some of the most difficult physics topics. It is a complete learning resource ideally suited for classroom demonstration as well as independent study. Each of the interactive modules allows students to manipulate variables and instantly observe the effect on the system. Each module features fully illustrated notes, tasks in which students analyze data recorded from the system, and fully illustrated solutions.

Topics Covered:

  • Simple Harmonic Motion - A spring oscillating in SHM with vector arrows for displacement, velocity and acceleration, and a real-time graph of each of these vectors against time. Manipulate variables - frequency, amplitude; dependent variables - max velocity, max acceleration. Special features: click on the words displacement, velocity and acceleration to add or remove them from the graph. Click on the graph's axes label to switch axis label to acceleration or displacement and velocity.
  • Simple Pendulum - A pendulum oscillating in SHM. Manipulate variables - Length, dependent variables - frequency, period.
  • Damped Oscillations - A damped mass spring system in damped oscillation with a real-time graph of displacement against time. Manipulate variables- frequency, amplitude and damping factor. Special features: click on the graph to record displacement-time coordinates.
  • Resonance - A mass spring system driven by a motor. Manipulate variables - frequency and damping level. Dependent variable - amplitude.
  • Phase - A real-time displacement-time graph of two rotating radii. Manipulate the frequency of each and the phase in radians between them.
  • Transverse Waves - A wave in true transverse motion. Manipulate variables frequency, wavelength (which are dependent on each other) and amplitude.
  • Longitudinal Waves - A wave in true Longitudinal motion. Manipulate variables frequency, wavelength (which are dependent on each other) and amplitude. Special features - clicking on the oscillating black lines when frozen will change their color to blue.
  • Superposition Of Waves - A real-time displacement-time plot of two waves and their resultant after superposition. Manipulate the frequency and amplitude of each and the phase between them.
  • Stationary Waves On A String - A real-time displacement distance plot of two traveling waves superimposing to form a stationary wave. Manipulate the harmonic number dependent variables - wavelength and frequency (as a multiple of the fundamental frequency F)
  • Stationary Waves In A Pipe - An animation of a stationary wave in an air column showing the air movement at nodes and antinodes. Manipulate the harmonic number dependent variables - wavelength and frequency (as a multiple of the fundamental frequency F). Special features: clicking on the oscillating black lines when frozen will change their color to blue.
  • Doppler Effect - The user controls the movement of a sound source (a bird) emitting chirps at regular time intervals. As the bird is moved (via the mouse) the effect on the spreading circular wavefronts and the sound heard by a stationary observer can be observed. The bird can also become a stationary source and the observer can be moved. Special features: clicking on the screen will freeze the motion ready for printing. Clicking again will unfreeze.
  • Beats - A real-time displacement-time plot of two sound sources (with rotating radii) and the resultant beat formed. The frequency of each source can be changed.
  • Two Source Interference - The animated pattern of wavefronts for two slit interference together with the interference pattern formed on a screen. Manipulate wavelength and slit spacing. Dependent variable - the angle of the first maxima.
  • Single Slit Diffraction - The animated pattern of wavefronts for single slit diffraction together with the diffraction pattern formed on a screen. Manipulate wavelength and slit width. Dependent variable - the angle of the first minima.
  • Diffraction Grating - The animated pattern of wavefronts for a diffraction grating together with directions of maxima. Manipulate wavelength and slit spacing. Dependent variable - the angle of the first and second minima.
